Why go

A good family beach in the dry season: lifeguards, livelier than Kata Noi, calmer than Patong. In the rainy season it becomes one of the island's surf beaches.

What you will find

Kata Yai on maps: about a kilometre of sand, popular with families and couples, with lifeguards. In the rainy season there are surf schools and boards for hire.

Getting there

By road. The Phuket Smart Bus from the airport passes through Kata and stops on the main road, not at hotels.

Before you go

The waves that bring the surfers also make Kata dangerous: five people have drowned here in three years, one under red flags in June 2025. One guide says the currents are strongest at the southern end. From May to October, swim only between the red and yellow flags, never under a red flag.

Common questions

Is Kata Beach good for families?

In the dry season, yes: it has lifeguards and is more relaxed than Patong. From May to October the sea is rough on many days, and nobody, children included, should swim under a red flag.

Can you learn to surf at Kata?

Yes, in the rainy season, when there are surf schools and boards for hire. That is also when the sea is most dangerous: never swim under a red flag.
